Mary Ann Clayton's parentage is a bit of a mystery. Information given onher marriage record states that her father was William Clayton. Otherfamily records, however, list her parents as Daniel Clayton and BettyThrift. The Clayton-Thrift line has been researched and extended butadditional work is needed to verify that there is a connection.
On the 1881 Census, Mary Ann reported that she was born in Mossley.Today, Mossley, along with other towns like Stalybridge andAshton-under-Lyne, are in the Tameside Metropolitan District. Atwww.tameside-net, a brief history of Mossley is given: Mossley wasincluded in the manor of Ashton and had no separate existence. The townwas situated in three separate counties - Yorkshire, Lancashire andCheshire and its three parts are still clearly defined by the positionsof the parish churches; St. George's (Lancashire), St. John the Baptist's(Yorkshire) and All Saints (Cheshire)." The town received its owncharter in 1885.
