Note: Dad underwent surgery for cancer of the esophagus in February of surgery itself was apparently successful, but because of the condition ofhis liver he did not survive the operation. Art got me a discount airfareand I flew back to NJ for the funeral, which was held at a funeral home. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Lakewood, where my mother was buried in1948. A memorial service was held at NCAR on Saturday, March 17, 1990. The nextmorning the family gathered in the Fleischmann Building on the NCAR mesa for aprivate memorial. Our children David, Alan, Jennifer, and Jonathan, Walter'ssister Jean, and I scattered Walter's ashes at the foot of a clump of pine treesjust a short distance west of the building.
